Determination of the Postmortem Interval - between Biological Indicators and Forensic Interpretation

The determination of the postmortem interval represents a fundamental component of forensic investigation, particularly in cases where establishing the timeline of events is essential for reconstructing the circumstances of death. This study examines the relationship between biological indicators of postmortem change and their interpretation within a forensic context, emphasizing the need for a correlated and applied approach.
Biological processes such as body cooling, lividity, and rigor mortis provide measurable data that may assist in estimating the time since death. In practice, these indicators are influenced by multiple variables, including environmental conditions, body position, clothing, and contact with surrounding surfaces. For example, a body exposed to lower temperatures may exhibit delayed postmortem changes, while a body in a warmer environment may show accelerated progression. Such variations affect the reliability of estimation when indicators are considered in isolation.
The analysis highlights the importance of correlating biological findings with scene-related elements, including the position of the body, trace evidence, and environmental characteristics. The postmortem interval is not established through a single parameter, but through the integration of multiple sources of information that must be interpreted together.
By approaching the postmortem interval as both a biological and interpretative construct, the study underlines the need for caution and methodological rigor. Estimation must remain grounded in observable data while accounting for the variability inherent in postmortem processes.
