Abstract

The paper analyzes the role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in protecting the territorial integrity of its member states and adapting collective security mechanisms to contemporary challenges in the international environment . The study highlights the transformations of the Euro-Atlantic security architecture in the context of the return of competition between great powers, the war in Ukraine and the intensification of hybrid, cyber and information threats . The legal foundations of collective security are examined, in particular the role of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, as well as the difficulties generated by new forms of aggression that go beyond the classic patterns of armed conflict. The paper also addresses the legal and political implications of NATO expansion, the relationship between the Alliance and the European Union and the need to strengthen strategic cooperation in the field of cyber, energy and information security. The analysis underlines that maintaining regional stability and the rules - based international order depends on the capacity of NATO and Euro - Atlantic partners to respond in a coordinated manner to multidimensional threats. At the same time, the strategic implications for Romania are highlighted, especially in the context of the consolidation of the Eastern flank and the increasing importance of the Black Sea region in the contemporary security architecture.
